Airsoft rockets

Post by vinni » 17 May 2016, 20:42

In what may be the coolest graduation project in the history of history, I've gone about determining the design parameters for compressed-air rockets that are actually safe for humans.

Range for the prototype is about 36m at a launch angle of 10°. Maximum range is about 62m, in case you want to use it as artillery or a Javelin.

safety, safety and yet again safety. Cool project but could be very unsafe

My thesis included a study of medical literature to determine the thresholds for medical safety. The rocket as seen in the clip has all the performance characteristics of a safe-for-humans-rocket, except for the nosecone (the test version had a nosecone made of styrofoam and is far too hard, a softer foam is needed for a fully functional version). All the other elements (size, pressure, velocity, range, ...) were according to safe operating limits calculated for impact safety.

The entire system is designed to cause no significant injury (= anything more severe than a big bruise) for a 50kg female (weight and gender are determining factors for blunt force trauma resistance). So it will be even more safe for anyone larger than that. Subsequently it is not safe for children but airsoft in general isn't, so meh.

It COULD be made unsafe just like any AEG COULD be upgraded beyond safety limits, but it's hard to design against willful misuse.
