If "Frasse" is the one that does most of the fireworks, he should also think of the time he uses from coming in to positions until he sets of his ordnance.
On Wednesday he rolled in to a T intercession up north by the Orlov base, people of course scattered thinking of artillery strike, I was in a position where I could observe him doing his thing. He first stopped and talk to some players for a bit, then rumbled around his ammo crate like he was looking for something to give the players he was talking to before he got of to light it up. It took around 2 min from he rolled in to the strike hit, this is to long a time for such an important aspect of the game in my mind.

Yes and no. Yes it is quite a long time, but just think of fast arty at berget... you would blow up infantry like hell... when it takes some time there is the chance that the position of the target/s has changed when the fireworks go off.
I for one called in some strikes myself and most of the time those rounds came about precisely the time BE told HQ it would come.
AND to Tomten, i was in HQ, operating the radio when you called for that strike. Your message made us lough like hell ^^ "...stopped by our position, but was just taking a piss. He scared the crap out of us." :D

One strike we ordered on the Southern Border Crossing (lerando side) was awesome to watch. The ATV passed by the 1st raven car, then the 2nd, the 3rd, 4th and stopped after the fifth car like he just wanted to watch what is happening at the border. And then shit hit the fan for those ravens! Five cars blew up and i don't know how much inf it took out. 8) :P :D

I completely disagree.

Having carried out that role at countless UK events, I strongly believe that when you arrive on the scene with the pyrotechnics (fireworks) then you need to be deploying them straight away.

There is realism in waiting for the guy to arrive, this simulates the registering of the artillery and the flight of the shells.

But having the enemy see the guy arrive and then spend several minutes doing things other than setting off big bangs, is giving the enemy a very good early warning system, and consequently they run. That is not realistic.

To Shaw, Yeah, it did really make us shit our pants

To Wormbyte, I completely agree with you, especially when the artillery is our only advantage as Blufor against a numerically superior foe. Although most times the artie did strike instantly and kill a lot of ravens/orlovs, so on the whole I am satisfied.

@ Tasgeir and the rest

that specific moment must actually have been not an pre-ordered art strike. it was my team member taksi that "ordered" a suicide arty strike just for the fun of it and Frasse "went along" with it. :D

I used to have a rule in my games where if I arrived on the on scene with pyrotechnics and players started to run then I used to call them out as dead straight away.

I have never been in an artillery barrage (thank christ) but I know that your probability of survival of increased if you go prone. If you start running with shells coming down and shell fragments flying everywhere, then you tend to have a rather larger chance of being cut to threads.

Hi guys.

When I arrive at a scene and people start running as soon as they hear the quad, they cheat. I am offgame and players are not supposed to react at all. That is why I try to be a little sneaky from time to time. Realistic....unfortunately not, but players behaviour calls for it. (btw I have seen several military videos of real UAV? attacks and people in those clips are NOT preparing for the impact...)

Also, I am not a cheetah. If I were to call out all those (sometimes up to 100 ppl) who run at first sight, I need superhuman speed to catch up to all of them.

Nevertheless, when people start falling back because they hear the quad, half off the mission is accomplished. The enemy forces is pushed back/down and the one ordering the airstrike/mortar/artillery/UAV-attack have the opportunity to mover forward and advance.

Last, when I run through the forest taking people out, some players just looks at me and wonders what I am doing. (in some language I cant understand) I have to inform them several times that I am a Game Master and that they need to take a hit and pull out their death-rag. And some of them, I'm sure, just tucks it back in when I'm gone. So realism of airstrike execution-timing isn't my MAIN priority...
